Stuff About Me.

My name is Jim Smallman and I'm an alcoholic. That's not a comedy introduction, it happens to be the truth (although I'm a good boy these days).
I'm a professional stand-up comedian based in Leicester. I've been performing since 2005 and in that time I've been lucky enough to get to travel the length and breadth of Britain making people laugh, and have even managed to travel overseas performing as well, with gigs in the USA and Singapore to my name. I've notched up the odd competition final appearance when I was a newcomer (Laughing Horse New Act Final in 2006, Leicester Mercury / Equity New Act Final in 2007), had some nice recognition for my first hour long show (nominated for best debut show in the 2009 Leicester Comedy Festival) and won two awards during the first ever Hollywood Fringe in 2010 - Best Comedy Performance and Best International Show.
I work for most of the major promoters as both a trusted and enthusiastic MC and reliably amusing act. Since 2009 I have been represented by Jon Briley at Best Medicine, so give him a shout should you want me for anything whatsoever - jon@bestmed.co.uk. I'm equally at home in rowdy weekend clubs, manic music festivals, chilled out arts centres and giggly student gigs.
In 2011 I'll be launching my second Edinburgh show entitled "Tattooligan".
Press Quotes:
“Wonderfully gritty … his struggles with mental illness and alcoholism make for impressive comic pickings” - The Guardian, 2010
“It’s obvious that Jim Smallman is a natural-born compere. He has such an easy rapport with the audience and tells his tales with a fluidity and energy that keeps everyone attentive. He could talk the hind legs off a donkey, but you suspect the donkey wouldn’t really mind … he’s an instinctive storyteller who draws out the humour in every anecdote. On the comedy spectrum, he falls somewhere between Frank Skinner and Dave Gorman … his silver-tongued banter is likely to charm most audiences” Chortle, 2009
“A talented comic” - TimeOut, 2010
“The second he focuses, he’s unbeatable … there’s an anger and sarcasm worthy of Jack Dee, Jo Brand, maybe even Bill Hicks. And all the time there’s this sense of impotent outrage, of righteous frustration, that’s up there with Basil Fawlty, the Blackadder dynasty, maybe even vintage Alexei Sayle” - 4Laughs, 2009
“Smallman playfully ruminates on his very comic life experiences… an engaging and entertaining performance and a truly enjoyable evening” - Three Weeks, 2010
"... Jim Smallman had an impressive stage presence for one so new, holding his own amongst pros... he has great potential." - Chortle review of De Montfort Hall show, 2007
"... Jim Smallman also shone. He's been on the stand-up circuit for less than two years, yet he looked completely at home in this lofty company. A laconic, sarcastic gag machine, he's certainly a comedian to keep an eye on" - Lincolnshire Echo, 2007
"First up was the extremely funny Jim Smallman... he earned lots of laughs with his naughty jokes" - Leicester Mercury, 2006
"...There is something intriguing about him... his outlook is sarcastic and frustrated, which he can, now and then, focus into a perfect gag. His bad taste Pussycat Dolls is an instant classic." - Chortle, 2006
